At a glance…

I haven’t had to look too hard to find students with religious lifestyles on campus. Like many things, it was just a matter of opening my eyes and simply becoming aware. The veiled hair on the bus, the scrutiny of ingredients at the supermarket and of course the starched white shirts, ties and backpacks are all signs of dedication to religious beliefs. A bit of research gave me a plethora of religious avenues to explore here at UGA. Here are a few that I hope to look at in the upcoming weeks. 1) Ramadan - We are in the middle of Ramadan, a holy month in the Islamic calendar. The most salient features of Ramadan are fasting and prayer. 2) Jewish High Holidays - Some of the most important holidays in Judaism are fast approaching. Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Kol Nidre among others will be celebrated at the Chabod and Hillel Jewish organizations. 3) Baha’i - A very young faith focused on the idea of unification of a global society. One race. One religion. There is a Baha’i Association at the University of Georgia. 4) Hindu Youth for Virtue and Action - Aimed at spreading awareness of Hindu culture and ideas for virtue and action 5) Phi Slam - A group of Christian guys who lead Bible studies and throw massive parties 6) Confession - A unique ritual in the life of a devout Catholic. More to come…

“I’m losing my religion,” said Athens’ very own R.E.M. The common conception of college life preaches just that: College is where students forget about their faith. A superficial glance around Athens might lead you to believe that the official religion here is football, academia or inebriation (which is often true); however, further inspection reveals a rich and diverse culture of faith that takes many forms and has many faces. This post marks the beginning of a semester-long documentary project in which I hope to take a closer look at some of those faces. How are students in Athens finding their religion?
Frozen Fountain

It’s the middle of the day. What could possibly look good in this light? The sun glimmered and flashed on the surface of the fountain. This is where harsh super-bright light comes in handy, when you want to take pictures at 1/8000 of a second. Shutter-speeds like that can freeze even an exploding fountain bursting water in every direction.
